Everything we offer

A dialogue between two legal cultures

Our aim is to strengthen the dialogue between two legal cultures which, despite their different histories, are closely intertwined in many ways.

1810
Founding of the Humboldt University of Berlin
1837
Founding of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
1940
Greek Civil Code, modelled on German law

Modern Greek civil law, from its first drafts to the Greek Civil Code of 1940, is modelled on German law. The Humboldt University of Berlin (founded 1810) and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (founded 1837) shared the same educational ideal from the outset, and countless institutional partnerships and personal friendships have shaped legal scholarship in both countries ever since.

Beyond the law, relations between Germany and Greece are equally multifaceted. They are shaped by common European interests and a long history of cultural exchange and friendship, but also by political tensions and social challenges, as during the financial crisis.

The German-Greek Civil Law Association is committed to better understanding and responsibly shaping these complex relations through legal dialogue, joint research projects and conferences, intellectual and financial support for (especially young) scholars, and personal exchange.
