Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law

Klaus J. Hopt is not only undisputedly one of Germany’s most renowned legal scholars but also one of the most important internationally active German lawyers of recent decades. He has distinguished himself not only through an academic body of work of remarkable volume and breadth that has been honoured internationally, but also through numerous positions outside the university and through his support of young lawyers, including many Greek doctoral students. Particularly impressive, and almost unparalleled, is his strong international orientation and network, with which he contributed decisively to building up the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, which he directed until his retirement in 2008 and where he still conducts research today. We are grateful to have Klaus J. Hopt as honorary president of our association.
